It’s Me, Pencil!

14-02-2023

Just pick up a ‘pencil’ and delve into the experiences it will furnish you with. “Hey, it’s me, the ‘Pencil’ in your hand.” “Don’t you wish to befriend me, rather than just using me and putting me away?” “Hi, I am Mr. Pencil. Glad to meet you.”

Be it a KG child or an adult, a mere pencil in one’s hand can create wonders. “Hey, don’t do that! Don’t scratch your ears with me! That’s not what I am meant for! Use me well, dwell in my work and take the credit.” “Scribbling, doodling, drawing, writing, sketching, drawing, shading, you name it, and I can do it!”

Me, in a KG child’s hand, making his first mark on paper. Me, in the hand of a senior student making the illustrations in his records. Me, in an artist’s hand, making a debut into the world of art. Me, in the hand of an architect, sketching the plan of a building. All these are my capabilities when I am in your hands. I am mild and gentle. The marks I make can be erased as many times as you wish, to perfect your work. Because I am erasable, I am often the first tool creative people use, when sketching out a new drawing, sculpture, painting or even designs for a new line of clothing!

When I am blunt, my work gets quite shabby. Keep me sharpened, and my work will be explicably neat and perfect.  Here’s a self-written poem about me!

Pick me up and use me well.

Illustrations clear, with stories to tell.

The strokes of perfection you will see.

That’s my work, it’s the lead in me.

Sharpen me when I become blunt

Or else, for my work you will bear the brunt!

When I am in someone’s hands, I can create wonders,

But once placed down, it’s boredom to the yonder.

The impressions I make are all black.

Bold and visible, easy to track.

Not satisfied with my work, just erase.

As simple as that, it’s a grace.

Cut short I shall for now.

And I bid you “chow’’

“Even though it’s chow for now, I am never out of reach of anyone. Just reach out to me and there I will be, at your service as always. I befriend everyone, but the kindergartners and the junior school students are my intimate buddies.”

Many a people have attained greatness, but to begin with, it was me that they took up in their hands to start their learning journey. So, remember, never be detached from me, a friend who can take you places, beginning merely with a few simple strokes.
